In a progressive step toward sustainable mobility, the Sindh government has announced new funding allocations in the 2025–26 provincial budget for electric vehicles (EVs), including EV taxis and scooters. The initiative aims to promote eco-friendly public transport while simultaneously empowering women and creating income opportunities for unemployed youth.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Other key participants included Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kamal Dayo, and TransKarachi CEO Fuad Ghaffar Soomro, who collectively reviewed ongoing projects and set new goals for the upcoming fiscal year.
Free Electric Scooters for Women
In a landmark move to enhance women’s mobility and independence, the Sindh government will distribute free electric scooters to eligible women through a transparent balloting process. This scheme is open to:
- Students
- Working women
- Entrepreneurs
Applicants must hold a valid two-wheeler driving license. To make the transition smoother, bike-riding training programs will be launched across the province, with female instructors guiding new riders in a supportive environment.
Electric Taxis on Easy Installments for Youth
For unemployed youth in Sindh, the government plans to offer electric taxis on easy installment plans. These vehicles will be financed in partnership with local banks, with the goal of enabling drivers to own their taxis over time. This initiative is not just about transportation — it’s a strategy for economic empowerment, job creation, and environmental protection rolled into one.
A Greener, More Inclusive Future
These EV projects mark a major shift toward low-emission urban mobility, aligning with global environmental trends. They also signal the Sindh government’s commitment to gender inclusion and sustainable economic growth.
As Pakistan grapples with urban air pollution and rising fuel costs, such forward-thinking policies may serve as a blueprint for other provinces.
