In a forward-looking move to modernize urban mobility, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce an electric tram system in Islamabad, positioning the city as a future hub of sustainable public transport.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa, following consultations with the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). The tram initiative forms part of a broader green mobility vision outlined by the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, with a focus on reducing emissions and improving public transit efficiency.

Feasibility Study Approved for Electric Trams

Chairman Randhawa confirmed that the CDA has officially approved a comprehensive feasibility study to evaluate the potential implementation of electric trams in the capital.

“We are progressing gradually — electric buses are already operational, and now we are evaluating the potential for electric trams,” he stated in a national press briefing.

The project aims to introduce Soft Wheel Electric Trams, a quieter and more energy-efficient alternative to conventional rail. These trams are expected to operate on Islamabad’s most congested and high-demand corridors to alleviate traffic and enhance commuter convenience.

The introduction of electric trams also promises to boost local job creation and technology transfer, as international collaborations could lead to the establishment of assembly units, maintenance facilities, and training programs for skilled labor. Experts believe that by incorporating smart mobility infrastructure, Islamabad can set a benchmark for other Pakistani cities, paving the way for a national transition toward cleaner, more efficient public transportation systems.
