Massive Landslides Block Karakoram Highway

The Karakoram Highway, a critical lifeline connecting Pakistan’s northern regions with the rest of the country and China, has once again been rendered impassable due to massive landslides triggered by relentless heavy rainfall in Upper Kohistan and Diamer. The extreme weather has caused widespread slope collapses, blocking this vital route at multiple points and leaving travelers stranded.

According to initial reports, the downpour began late Friday night, continuing into Saturday morning. Local police confirm that no fewer than six key locations along the highway have been affected by landslides, with earth and rock debris making the road completely inaccessible.

Both commercial freight traffic and passenger buses are trapped, raising concerns over supply chain delays, tourism setbacks, and the safety of stranded individuals. Rescue and emergency teams have been deployed to clear the obstructions, but ongoing rainfall, poor visibility, and slippery terrain are significantly hampering operations.

The stretch between Chilas and Gilgit is especially affected, with no estimated timeline for restoration yet available. Authorities are urging the public to avoid travel on the Karakoram Highway and stay informed via official weather and traffic channels.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is not just a road—it’s a strategic artery that supports economic activity, inter-regional trade, tourism, and community access in some of the most remote parts of the country. Any disruption on this route impacts livelihoods, supply chains, and regional connectivity.

With further rain forecasted, officials warn of secondary landslides and are reviewing current disaster management strategies, including the need for slope stabilization, improved drainage, and early warning systems in high-risk mountainous areas.

As emergency efforts continue, the situation highlights the urgent need for long-term climate-resilient infrastructure and preparedness planning to safeguard key national routes like the Karakoram Highway from natural disasters.
