To tackle traffic congestion and improve goods transportation, a new 25-kilometer road will be built parallel to the Lyari Expressway in Karachi. This dedicated corridor for heavy vehicles will ensure 24/7 movement of trucks and trailers, reducing pressure on existing roads.

Project Funding and Timeline

The project is being funded by Exim Bank Korea, which has granted financial support for the road’s construction. A feasibility study is expected to be completed within eight months, after which construction work will commence.

How This Road Will Benefit Karachi

  • Reduced Traffic Congestion – Heavy vehicles will have a dedicated route, minimizing their impact on city roads.
  • Faster Goods Transportation – Trucks and trailers will be able to move without delays, boosting trade and logistics efficiency.
  • Improved Road Safety – With heavy traffic redirected, smaller vehicles and commuters will experience safer roads.

Sindh Government’s Crackdown on Unfit Commercial Vehicles

To further improve road safety, the Sindh government recently launched a crackdown on unfit commercial vehicles. This action follows a rise in fatal road accidents, many of which involved unsafe trucks, buses, and trailers.

Key Directives from the Transport Department

  • Strict Action Against Unfit Vehicles – Authorities have been ordered to remove unsafe vehicles from roads.
  • Fitness Certificate Verification – Many commercial vehicles in Sindh have been found using fitness certificates from other provinces without undergoing proper inspection.
  • Mandatory Sindh Fitness Certificates – Vehicles permanently operating in Sindh must obtain fitness certificates from Sindh Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs).
  • Modern Security Features – New fitness certificates will include QR codes to prevent fraud.
  • Valid Driving Licenses – All commercial vehicle drivers must hold proper licenses to continue operating.

Route Permits Linked to Compliance

To ensure transporters follow safety regulations:

  • Route permits will only be issued or renewed if vehicles have valid QR-coded fitness certificates.
  • This step aims to eliminate unfit vehicles and improve the overall safety of Karachi’s roads.

Final Thoughts

The new 25-km road project and the crackdown on unsafe commercial vehicles mark major steps towards improving Karachi’s transport infrastructure. With dedicated routes for heavy vehicles and stricter safety regulations, the city is moving towards safer, smoother, and more efficient roads for both commuters and businesses.
