Lahore High Court Orders Crackdown on Unfit Vehicles to Combat Smog

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken decisive action to tackle the worsening smog conditions in Punjab by ordering the seizure of unfit vehicles. This measure is part of a broader initiative to address Lahore’s alarming air pollution levels, with the city recently ranked among the most polluted globally.

Strict Enforcement to Improve Air Quality

The directive, issued by Justice Shahid Karim in a three-page order during the hearing of smog-related petitions, emphasizes the need for stricter regulations on vehicles failing to meet fitness standards. These vehicles have been identified as significant contributors to the region’s deteriorating air quality.

In line with the court’s decision, the district administration has levied fines amounting to Rs13.5 million on vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates. This crackdown is part of a comprehensive strategy to mitigate pollution through regular inspections and stricter monitoring.

Specialized Anti-Smog Squads Deployed

To enforce the LHC’s directives, Lahore traffic police have established specialized anti-smog squads. These squads are equipped with trucks to identify and impound vehicles emitting excessive smoke or lacking proper inspection. The initiative aims to ensure that offenders are penalized and removed from the roads, reinforcing accountability.

A Multi-Pronged Approach

The LHC’s decision reflects the urgency of addressing smog, which poses severe health risks to residents. By targeting unfit vehicles, authorities aim to reduce one of the leading causes of air pollution. The strategy also includes increased awareness about vehicle maintenance and compliance with environmental standards, promoting long-term sustainability.

This proactive approach highlights the administration’s commitment to curbing pollution and safeguarding public health. As these measures take effect, the hope is for cleaner air and a healthier environment for the people of Lahore.
