The fiscal year 2023-24 saw a 3.10% decline in the sales of motorbikes and three-wheelers in Pakistan, as reported by the Pakistan Automobile Manufacturing Association (PAMA). The total sales dropped from 1,186,969 units in the previous year to 1,150,112 units in the current year, reflecting a challenging period for the industry.

Motorbike Market Analysis

The motorbike segment faced significant challenges, with several leading brands experiencing notable declines. Honda motorcycles, despite being a market leader, saw a slight dip of 0.21%, with sales decreasing from 1,005,408 units to 1,003,253 units. This minor reduction suggests that Honda maintained a strong market presence despite the overall market contraction.

Suzuki faced a dramatic drop in sales, with a 42.35% decline from 29,274 units to 16,876 units. This significant decrease underscores the difficulties Suzuki encountered in maintaining its market share.

Yamaha also struggled, with sales halving from 13,217 units to 6,562 units, representing a 50.34% decrease. Similarly, Road Prince motorbikes experienced a substantial reduction in sales, falling by 42.04% from 27,690 units to 16,049 units.

United Auto motorcycles saw a more moderate decline, with sales decreasing by 9.48% from 91,347 units to 82,683 units, highlighting relatively better performance compared to other brands in the segment.

Three-Wheeler Market Dynamics

The three-wheeler segment, however, displayed a mixed performance with some brands achieving growth. United Auto three-wheelers recorded a significant increase in sales, rising by 22.65% from 1,708 units to 2,095 units. Sazgar three-wheelers also experienced robust growth, with sales increasing by 35.88% from 9,381 units to 15,014 units.

On the other hand, Qingqi three-wheeler sales decreased by 19.87%, dropping from 6,564 units to 5,977 units. Road Prince three-wheelers faced an even steeper decline, with sales plummeting by 60.04% from 1,677 units to 1,303 units.

Industry Implications

The mixed performance of the motorbike and three-wheeler market in Pakistan during FY 2023-24 indicates varying degrees of success among different brands and segments. While the overall market faced a downturn, the growth in certain three-wheeler brands suggests opportunities for manufacturers to capitalize on shifting consumer preferences and market dynamics.

Manufacturers must adapt to these changing conditions and explore innovative strategies to enhance their market presence. The data reveals that despite a challenging year, there is potential for growth in specific segments, underscoring the importance of agility and customer-centric approaches in the evolving market landscape.
