The upcoming Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Karachi is poised to become Pakistan’s first fully electric bus corridor, reaffirming the city’s commitment to sustainable urban transport. The project, funded by the World Bank, will feature only electric buses, making it a pioneering effort in eco-friendly mass transit across the country.
This announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a recent site visit to the Yellow Line’s development area near the Jam Sadiq Bridge, where he met with a World Bank delegation.
Route Overview and Connectivity
The Yellow Line BRT will cover a major corridor from Dawood Chowrangi in Quaidabad to Numaish, intersecting critical zones such as:
- Korangi Industrial Area
- Main Korangi Road
- FTC Interchange
- Sharea Faisal
- Shahrah-e-Quaideen
- Kashmir Road
Eventually, the line will merge with the Red Line BRT at Numaish, ensuring broader connectivity across Karachi’s urban grid.
Eco-Friendly & Affordable Urban Transit
Labeling the initiative a “visionary step”, Minister Memon stated that only electric buses will be deployed to ensure minimal environmental impact, reduce fuel costs, and contribute to clean air quality in the city. The Yellow Line aims to offer safe, fast, and affordable public transportation, especially beneficial for workers in industrial zones.
This project builds on the government’s earlier successes with the women-only Pink Bus and Pakistan’s first electric bus service, both of which are operational and gaining public traction.
A Catalyst for Social Change
More than just a transit system, the Yellow Line BRT is positioned as a foundation for social and environmental change. Minister Memon shared that the ongoing electric scooter scheme for women has already received over 8,000 applications, reflecting a growing public shift towards sustainable and inclusive mobility.
Investment Opportunities and Tax Incentives
To attract further development in the electric and transportation sectors, the government has introduced special economic zones with 10-year tax breaks, offering a strong incentive for foreign and local investment in sustainable urban infrastructure.
The Yellow Line BRT Karachi represents a bold move toward a greener, smarter, and more inclusive future for urban transportation. With 100% electric buses and integration into Karachi’s wider BRT network, it’s expected to transform daily commuting for thousands—setting a new benchmark for cities across Pakistan.
