During the much-anticipated launch event, Lei Jun announced the pricing details, revealing that the standard SU7 model would be available at 215,900 yuan ($29,872; £23,663), while the Max version would come at a price of 299,900 yuan. The competitive pricing strategy underscores Xiaomi’s commitment to making innovative technology accessible to a wider audience.

The response was nothing short of extraordinary, with Xiaomi receiving over 50,000 orders for the electric car within a mere 27 minutes of sales commencement. This overwhelming demand reflects the anticipation and excitement surrounding Xiaomi’s foray into the EV market.

Xiaomi’s entry into the electric vehicle arena comes at a pivotal juncture when global sales growth is experiencing a slowdown, intensifying competition and price wars. By stepping into this space, Xiaomi positions itself as a formidable contender against established EV manufacturers like Tesla and BYD, setting the stage for a new era of competition and innovation.

Mr. Lei emphasized the impressive capabilities of the SU7, highlighting its remarkable range of 700km (435 miles) on a single charge. This places the vehicle in league with esteemed models from Porsche, surpassing even the range offered by Tesla’s Model 3. Xiaomi’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology extends beyond hardware, with the SU7 boasting an operating system reminiscent of the seamless user experience found in its smartphones, laptops, and other devices. This cohesive ecosystem is poised to resonate with Xiaomi’s existing customer base, further enhancing brand loyalty and market penetration.

With Xiaomi’s established prowess in the consumer electronics sector, its foray into electric vehicles signals a convergence of technology and mobility, poised to redefine the automotive landscape. As the third-largest smartphone seller globally, commanding approximately 12% of the market share, Xiaomi brings a formidable presence and a track record of innovation to the EV market.

Production of the SU7 will be undertaken at a state-of-the-art factory in Beijing, operated by a subsidiary of the renowned state-owned car manufacturer BAIC Group. With a production capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles per year, Xiaomi is poised to scale its operations and meet the burgeoning demand for its pioneering electric vehicles.

Innovation knows no bounds, and Xiaomi’s venture into the electric vehicle market epitomizes the company’s relentless pursuit of technological excellence and consumer-centric innovation. With the launch of its inaugural EV, Xiaomi embarks on a transformative journey, shaping the future of mobility and redefining the dynamics of the automotive industry.
