Volkswagen is preparing a major update for its popular electric hatchback. The company will soon introduce a refreshed version of the ID.3 under a new name, the ID.3 Neo. The updated model is expected to arrive next month with several improvements designed to keep the vehicle competitive in the growing electric car market.
The ID.3 has been one of Volkswagen’s most important electric vehicles in Europe. As the brand’s most affordable EV for now, the compact hatchback plays a key role in the company’s transition toward electrification. The upcoming facelift and name change aim to extend the model’s lifecycle until the next generation electric Golf arrives later in the decade.
Volkswagen has already released teaser images of the updated vehicle. While the images focus on the exterior, the company confirmed that the ID.3 Neo will introduce several practical improvements inside the cabin.
New Technology and Practical Features
One of the most notable updates is the return of more physical buttons. Earlier versions of the ID.3 relied heavily on touch controls, which many drivers found difficult to use while driving. The new version will include additional physical controls similar to those expected in future Volkswagen electric models such as the upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross.
Another major feature is Vehicle to Load functionality. This technology allows the car to supply electricity from its high voltage battery to external devices. The ID.3 Neo includes a standard 230 volt household outlet inside the car.
Drivers can also connect an adapter to the charging port to access an additional outlet. Together, the system can deliver up to 3.6 kilowatts of power. This capability allows owners to run camping equipment, power tools, or household appliances directly from the car’s battery.
Volkswagen is also introducing a digital key system as an optional feature. Owners will be able to store the key in their smartphone digital wallet. This allows them to unlock and start the vehicle using their phone without carrying the traditional key fob.
The updated ID.3 Neo will also feature a new infotainment system called Innovision. The system includes an integrated app store that allows drivers to download audio and streaming applications. Users can also activate additional vehicle functions or extend certain services directly through the interface.
Alongside the ID.3 update, Volkswagen is improving other electric models in its lineup. The ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers will receive a new lithium iron phosphate battery pack with a capacity of 58 kilowatt hours. This update aims to improve efficiency and extend the driving range of base models.

Rear wheel drive versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 will also receive a new electric motor called the APP350. The new motor produces 187 horsepower and replaces the older APP310 unit used in earlier versions.
These upgrades reflect Volkswagen’s broader strategy to improve its electric vehicle lineup while preparing for future models. By refreshing the ID.3 with new features and a revised identity, the company hopes to maintain interest in its compact EV until the next generation electric Golf arrives around 2028.
