In a major infrastructure development boost, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has announced that construction on the long-delayed Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) and the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) will begin this year. These projects—collectively valued at $2 billion—are set to transform regional connectivity and accelerate economic growth across Sindh and southern Pakistan.

The announcement came during a high-level meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA), where Khan emphasized the urgency of initiating long-overdue road infrastructure projects.

M-6: A Long-Delayed Pillar of CPEC Finally Moving Forward

The M-6 motorway, a crucial segment of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has faced a delay of nearly six years. However, momentum has recently shifted after a Senate committee ordered that all other road projects be put on hold to prioritize M-6.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, also present at the meeting, confirmed full support from the Planning Ministry and assured that the M-6 project would now receive top priority. Previously, Iqbal had suggested splitting the M-6 into three segments to fast-track its completion. With Abdul Aleem Khan’s latest confirmation, construction is expected to commence before the year ends.

Simultaneous Progress on M-9 and Key Regional Routes

Alongside M-6, the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) will also undergo significant development. The M-9 is a vital link between Pakistan’s two major urban hubs and supports a high volume of daily commuters and freight.

Minister Khan further outlined plans to initiate motorway extensions to Mansehra, Naran, and Kaghan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—a move expected to promote tourism and regional integration.

In Balochistan, the government is upgrading the Quetta-Karachi Highway (N-25) into a four-lane expressway, enhancing safety and reducing travel time on a route known for its economic and strategic importance.

Additionally, the minister has directed the formulation of a comprehensive plan for an 18-kilometre link road connecting Lahore to Kasur, aimed at easing urban congestion and improving inter-city access.

Why These Projects Matter?

  • Economic Growth: The motorways will facilitate trade and travel, boosting Pakistan’s logistics and industrial sectors.
  • CPEC Integration: M-6 is vital to the success of CPEC, enabling a direct north-south corridor across Pakistan.
  • Safety and Efficiency: The upgraded road network will reduce travel time and improve safety on historically dangerous highways.
  • Tourism Promotion: Better roads to scenic areas like Kaghan and Naran will attract more local and international tourists.
