A new off grid electric vehicle charging station in California is drawing attention for offering free fast charging powered entirely by solar energy. Developed by startup PowerStation Charging, the facility operates without any connection to the traditional power grid, marking a significant step in sustainable charging infrastructure.
Located along Interstate 15 near Baker, California, the station uses a large solar array combined with battery storage to deliver consistent charging performance. The system includes more than 1000 solar panels that generate up to 640 kilowatts of power. This energy feeds into a massive 3.4 megawatt hour battery, allowing the station to operate even when sunlight is not available.
The charging site currently features four fast charging ports with a shared output of 360 kilowatts. This means power is distributed depending on how many vehicles are charging at the same time. If only one vehicle is connected, it can access the full output. When multiple vehicles are plugged in, the power is divided بينهم accordingly.
How the Off Grid Charging System Works
The key feature of this station is its complete independence from the grid. By combining solar generation with large scale battery storage, the facility ensures continuous operation throughout the day and night. This setup reduces reliance on conventional energy sources and supports cleaner transportation solutions.
PowerStation Charging has also simplified the user experience. Drivers do not need an app, subscription, or membership to access the chargers. For now, charging is completely free for all users until May 31, 2026. After this period, the company plans to introduce pricing between $0.30 and $0.45 per kWh, depending on demand and solar conditions.
The company has outlined plans to expand its network. A second station along the same highway is expected to open later this year, while additional locations are planned for 2027. These developments suggest growing interest in renewable powered charging solutions across the United States.
The project reflects a broader trend in the EV industry. Automakers and infrastructure providers are increasingly investing in solar powered charging stations paired with battery storage systems. These setups not only reduce environmental impact but also address grid capacity challenges in remote or high demand areas.
