In a major step toward revolutionizing Karachi’s public transportation infrastructure, the Sindh government has earmarked Rs. 53 billion for the development of the Yellow Line and Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects in its 2025–26 provincial budget. This is part of a broader strategy to improve urban mobility and reduce severe traffic congestion in Pakistan’s largest city.

According to budget documents and official sources:

  • Rs. 27 billion is designated for the Yellow Line BRT
  • Rs. 26 billion is allocated to the Red Line BRT

These two projects represent some of the largest investments in Karachi’s mass transit system, and are expected to serve millions of daily commuters by providing a faster, more reliable alternative to private transport.

Impact and Objectives

The Yellow Line BRT will link major residential and commercial hubs, aiming to slash travel times and ease pressure on overcrowded roads. The Red Line BRT, currently under construction, is set to connect high-density areas of the city with key commercial zones, significantly expanding the existing Karachi public transport network.

Both projects are designed to provide:

  • Improved connectivity across Karachi
  • Reduction in private vehicle usage
  • Environmentally sustainable urban transport

Broader Development Plans

The BRT investments are part of a comprehensive Rs. 110 billion development package for Karachi in FY 2025–26. Key funding allocations include:

  • Rs. 8.8 billion – Karachi Water and Sewerage Services
  • Rs. 18 billion – Click Project (Local Government)
  • Rs. 3 billion – Click Investment Project
  • Rs. 9 billion – Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project
  • Rs. 18.8 billion – Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Phase-2

Of the total funding, Rs. 13 billion will be provided by the provincial government, while Rs. 97 billion will come through foreign project assistance, showcasing significant international support for Karachi’s urban transformation.

The Sindh government’s heavy investment in the Yellow and Red Line BRT systems underscores its commitment to solving Karachi’s long-standing transport challenges. By prioritizing modern, efficient, and eco-friendly mass transit, the province is paving the way for a smarter, more connected urban future.
