The Sindh government is set to assume full control of the Green Line and Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems from the federal government on March 10, 2025. This decision, finalized during the 14th meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Board, marks a significant shift in the province’s public transport management.

Under this transition, the Sindh administration will oversee the 100-bus fleet, ensuring operational efficiency and service improvement. The existing staff will be retained for three months, allowing for a smooth transition while legal processes for BRT agreements are finalized.

Government’s Commitment to Public Transport

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who chaired the meeting, reaffirmed the provincial government’s dedication to enhancing urban mobility. He emphasized that taking direct control of the BRT systems would lead to better service management, maintenance, and future expansion plans.

Both BRT lines had experienced significant delays before their launch. The Green Line BRT became operational in January 2022, while the Orange Line BRT began service in September 2022. Now, with the Sindh government at the helm, further improvements and expansion efforts are expected.

Impact on Karachi’s Public Transport

The transfer of BRT ownership to the Sindh government is seen as a major step towards improving Karachi’s public transportation system. It allows the provincial authorities to implement localized policies, ensuring that the service caters to the city’s growing transit needs.

With better resource allocation, maintenance, and policy-making, this transition has the potential to improve public transport efficiency, making daily commutes easier for thousands of passengers. Commuters and transport experts will closely watch how the Sindh government enhances service quality post-handover.
