The Sindh government has taken a major step toward enhancing Karachi’s public transportation system by approving the procurement of new buses, including modern double-decker and electric buses. This decision, aimed at improving the city’s transport infrastructure, was announced by Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon during a recent press briefing.
Expansion of Public Transport
Memon emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize public transit in Karachi. While the federal government had initially pledged to provide 180 electric buses, the required funds for their procurement have not yet been released. Despite this, the Sindh government remains committed to advancing the city’s transportation network with its own resources.
Automation in Anti-Narcotics Operations
In addition to transport improvements, the Sindh cabinet has also approved measures to introduce automation in anti-narcotics operations. This move is aimed at strengthening law enforcement and making drug control efforts more effective and transparent.
Women’s Mobility and Empowerment
To further support women’s independent mobility, the provincial administration has launched initiatives to distribute free pink scooters to women who hold a valid two-wheeler license. Additionally, a monthly lottery system will be introduced to award electric bikes to eligible women, including students and working professionals.
Recognizing that many women may not have prior experience in riding bikes, the government will provide professional training from female instructors. To maintain fairness and ensure that the initiative serves its intended purpose, recipients of these electric bikes will be prohibited from selling them for a period of seven years.
Ensuring Quality and Safety
Addressing concerns about bus design, Memon stated that both he and the Chief Minister, who have engineering backgrounds, had initially objected to the proposed design. Their concerns were later validated, prompting necessary improvements to ensure the buses meet safety and quality standards.
A Step Towards Sustainable and Inclusive Transport
This initiative represents a significant transformation in Karachi’s public transport landscape. By integrating modern, eco-friendly buses and empowering women through independent mobility solutions, the Sindh government aims to create a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive transportation network. These efforts not only address the city’s growing transportation demands but also promote gender inclusivity and environmental responsibility.
