The Sindh government has announced a major digital security and mobility initiative by integrating surveillance systems of public transport vehicles with the provincial Safe City Network. Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that cameras installed in the People’s Bus Service and the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi Service will be connected to the Safe City Project through a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS).
According to Memon, this integration will play a key role in strengthening urban safety, traffic oversight, and passenger security in Karachi and other major cities. “By implementing ITS, we are introducing smart transport monitoring and enhancing safety across our public mobility network,” he stated.
EV Taxi Service to Launch in December
Memon confirmed that the EV Taxi Service will launch in Karachi in December, providing a more:
- Eco-friendly
- Affordable
- Comfortable
transport option for daily commuters. The initiative is part of Sindh’s broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions and shift towards sustainable urban mobility.
During a recent meeting, a delegation of investors presented proposals related to:
- Operating models
- Fleet procurement
- Charging station networks
- Management frameworks
The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, SMTA Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, and other senior transport officials. Memon emphasized that Karachi requires an upgraded public transport system, and the EV Taxi Service will help phase out old, inefficient, and polluting vehicles.
Pink EV Taxi Service for Women
In a major step toward enhancing women’s mobility and safety, the Sindh government will also introduce a Pink EV Taxi Service exclusively for women passengers. These taxis will feature:
- Real-time monitoring through ITS
- Trained women-friendly staff or female drivers (where applicable)
- Safety-enabled surveillance equipment
The initiative aims to provide secure, dignified, and comfortable travel for women across the province.
Public–Private Partnerships to Drive Growth
Memon highlighted that public–private partnerships (PPP) are essential to developing sustainable and modern transport systems. He noted that the EV Taxi Service represents both an economic investment opportunity and an environmental improvement strategy, contributing to:
- Reduced fuel dependency
- Lower carbon emissions
- Increased employment
- Improved public mobility
The government also plans to expand the EV Taxi Service from Karachi to Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other major urban centers.
By integrating public transport surveillance with the Safe City Network and launching EV-based mobility services, Sindh is stepping toward smarter, safer, and greener urban transportation. The initiative demonstrates a shift toward technology-led mobility solutions, improved passenger security, and sustainable economic growth.
