The Sindh government has announced the expansion of its electric scooter training program for women to Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana, following the overwhelming success of the initiative in Karachi. The program is part of the province’s broader efforts to promote gender equality, sustainable transport, and women’s empowerment through mobility.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, where several key updates on transport and mass transit projects were discussed.
Empowering Women Through Mobility
Sharjeel Memon emphasized that the Sindh government is taking practical and inclusive measures to improve women’s participation in public life by ensuring they have access to safe, affordable, and independent modes of transport.
The e-scooter training initiative, launched in collaboration with a private sector partner, aims to equip women and female students with the necessary skills, confidence, and road awareness to commute on electric scooters. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive free driving licences, helping remove financial barriers that often prevent women from obtaining mobility independence.
Focus on Sustainable Transport Development
Beyond the scooter initiative, the meeting also reviewed progress on key infrastructure projects across Sindh. One major highlight was the completion of the Taj Haider Bridge, a critical component of Karachi’s Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The bridge is set to open soon, significantly improving connectivity and reducing congestion in the area.
In addition, the government approved a new electric bus route from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Merewether Tower, featuring 15 modern, eco-friendly buses. This move aligns with Sindh’s ongoing commitment to sustainable urban mobility and reducing carbon emissions in the province’s largest city.
A Step Toward Inclusive and Greener Transport
The expansion of the Sindh electric scooter training for women reflects a growing commitment to empowering women through transport accessibility while promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions. By extending this successful Karachi initiative to Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana, the Sindh government is paving the way for a more inclusive, progressive, and sustainable transportation future.
With free licensing support, private sector collaboration, and the addition of new electric bus routes, Sindh’s transport policies under Sharjeel Inam Memon continue to prioritize women’s empowerment, green mobility, and urban development across the province.
