The Sindh government has announced an ambitious initiative to modernize Karachi’s mass transit system by introducing 8,000 electric buses. This project, which aims to revolutionize public transport in Pakistan’s largest city, will be rolled out in three phases, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.

Phase-wise Implementation Plan

The plan’s first phase will see 500 electric buses deployed within the first year. Currently, 50 buses are already operating on key routes across Karachi, providing a glimpse of the project’s potential impact.

In the second phase, 1,500 electric buses will be added to the fleet, further enhancing the city’s transit capacity. The third and final phase will introduce between 4,000 and 6,000 additional electric buses over the next four years. To support the large-scale deployment, the government will also establish essential infrastructure, including charging stations, depots, and bus stations.

Sustainability Through Solar Energy

To ensure the project’s sustainability, the Sindh government plans to build a solar power plant with a 1GW capacity. This will provide clean energy to support the operation of the electric buses, reducing the environmental footprint of the initiative.

Funding and Commitment

The government has allocated substantial funding for the project. For the fiscal year 2025, Rs412.50 million has been set aside to kickstart the initiative. Additionally, Rs1.65 billion will be earmarked annually for the next eight years to cover operational costs, reflecting the government’s long-term commitment to Karachi’s public transport transformation.

A Cleaner Future for Karachi

The introduction of electric buses promises significant benefits for Karachi’s residents, including reduced air pollution, quieter roads, and a more efficient transport network. The project aligns with global trends toward sustainable urban mobility, marking a step forward in addressing the city’s chronic transportation challenges.

This initiative underscores the Sindh government’s dedication to creating a cleaner, greener future for Karachi, setting a precedent for other cities in Pakistan to follow.
