Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is poised to inaugurate Pakistan’s largest electric vehicle (EV) depot at Zero Point, Islamabad, during the second half of October. The landmark project, supervised by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), represents a major advancement in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation.
According to CDA officials, the Rs 1.5 billion project is nearing completion and is being developed under the direct supervision of CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa and his team. The facility is being constructed in record time, reflecting the government’s commitment to transforming Islamabad into a model of modern, green urban infrastructure.
Once inaugurated, 160 air-conditioned electric buses will start operating across Islamabad, providing residents with a clean, efficient, and comfortable commuting experience. The state-of-the-art depot will serve as the central hub for these electric buses, supporting simultaneous charging for 40 vehicles.
Project Director Qazi Umar stated that work is continuing around the clock on the CDA chairman’s instructions to ensure completion by October 15. The depot is being equipped with modern facilities, automated systems, and sustainable energy solutions capable of handling up to 120 buses at a time.
The establishment of this electric vehicle depot aligns with the federal government’s broader strategy to promote clean energy and reduce urban air pollution. Islamabad’s transition to electric public transport will not only help lower carbon emissions but also cut down on the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.
This initiative follows other major transport upgrades in the capital, including the Metro Bus expansion and the introduction of eco-friendly buses under the CDA’s sustainable urban mobility plan.
By launching Pakistan’s largest EV depot, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif aims to strengthen the country’s position in the region’s emerging green mobility market and set a precedent for future clean transport infrastructure nationwide.
The upcoming inauguration marks a historic step toward environmentally sustainable urban development. With advanced technology, large-scale charging infrastructure, and a growing fleet of electric buses, Islamabad is well on its way to becoming Pakistan’s first smart and green capital city.
