Motorists in Sharjah now have a new incentive to settle their traffic fines early — but repeat offenders and reckless drivers won’t benefit from it. The Sharjah Executive Council has approved a revised traffic fine discount scheme aimed at rewarding timely payments while sending a clear warning to those committing serious road violations.
Up to 35% Discount on Traffic Fines
Under the new scheme, which officially came into effect this week, drivers can receive a 35% discount on traffic fines, including vehicle impound and release fees, if they clear their dues within 60 days of the violation date. If the fine is paid within one year, a 25% discount will still apply. However, the one-year discount does not cover impound charges.
This updated policy is designed to encourage residents to clear outstanding fines promptly, easing financial burdens and ensuring smoother traffic enforcement.
No Discounts for Major Offenses
However, authorities have made it clear that this discount does not apply to 40 major traffic offenses that are directly linked to deadly accidents and dangerous driving. Offenses excluded from the discount include:
- Overspeeding by more than 60 km/h or 80 km/h
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Causing deaths or severe injuries
- Running red lights, regardless of vehicle type
- Reckless overtaking and sudden swerving
- Using a mobile phone while driving
- Failing to stop after an accident
- Blocking emergency vehicles or school buses
- Driving vehicles that are excessively noisy or unsafely loaded
“These aren’t minor infractions — they’re life-threatening behaviors,” said Colonel Abdulrahman Mohammed Khater, Deputy Director of the Security Media Department at Sharjah Police. “Excluding them from the discount sends a strong and clear message.”
Pedestrians Now Face Penalties Too
In a first for Sharjah, pedestrians will also face fines if they break traffic laws. Jaywalking or ignoring pedestrian crossing signals will lead to penalties recorded directly through the violator’s Emirates ID. This step aims to reduce risky behavior that can cause accidents and traffic delays.
Part of a Bigger Road Safety Campaign
The new fine discount policy is part of a wider collaboration between Sharjah Police and the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority to make the emirate’s streets safer. Measures include:
- Upgrading pedestrian crossings in busy areas
- Installing smart traffic signals to better manage traffic flow
- Improving signage in accident-prone zones
To ensure compliance, the authorities have deployed a mix of uniformed officers and plainclothes patrols across roads and sidewalks.
Bottom Line
Sharjah’s revised traffic fine discount scheme strikes a balance between incentivizing responsible motorists and taking a zero-tolerance approach towards serious traffic offenses. By encouraging early fine payments and investing in road safety upgrades, the emirate hopes to build a safer, more disciplined traffic environment for all.
