Islamabad has officially inaugurated a new underpass at Shaheen Chowk, marking another significant step in the capital’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade. The project, completed in a record 63 days, aims to ease traffic congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections and improve overall commuting efficiency for thousands of daily motorists.
The underpass was opened for traffic with immediate effect, providing signal-free movement and smoother connectivity across key routes of the city.
Signal-Free Design to Reduce Congestion
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, while announcing the opening, stated that the underpass is now fully operational and accessible to all vehicles. He emphasized that the signal-free design would allow uninterrupted traffic flow, especially during peak hours when congestion at Shaheen Chowk previously caused significant delays.
The underpass is expected to reduce travel time, lower fuel consumption, and improve road safety by minimizing stop-and-go traffic. To further enhance usability, permanent decorative lighting has been installed, improving visibility at night while adding to the city’s urban aesthetics.
CDA Confirms Timely Completion
Prior to the inauguration, Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa visited the site to review the project’s progress. Officials confirmed that all sections of the underpass were completed on schedule, highlighting improved project management, efficient planning, and strong coordination among departments.
Randhawa expressed satisfaction with both the quality and speed of construction, noting that the project would provide immediate and long-term relief to commuters navigating this critical junction.
Traffic Management and New Year Arrangements
Alongside the underpass opening, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also announced a grand New Year’s Eve fireworks display at F-9 Park. Authorities have made special arrangements for families, including designated parking zones and comprehensive traffic management plans to ensure smooth movement during the celebrations.
The City Traffic Officer (CTO) will actively monitor traffic conditions throughout the event, while the Chief Commissioner will personally oversee operational arrangements to maintain public safety and order.
Part of Islamabad’s Broader Infrastructure Vision
The Shaheen Chowk underpass is part of Islamabad’s broader strategy to modernize infrastructure, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and enhance urban mobility. Over recent years, the capital has seen the development of multiple underpasses, flyovers, and road expansions aimed at accommodating growing traffic demands.
With the opening of the Shaheen Chowk underpass, Islamabad continues to move toward a more efficient, commuter-friendly road network. The project reflects the government’s commitment to rapid development, improved traffic management, and better quality of life for city residents.
