Sazgar to Begin Local Assembly of GWM Tank 500 and Poer Canon Series in Pakistan by 2026

Sazgar Engineering Works Limited is preparing for a major expansion in Pakistan’s automotive landscape as it gears up to locally assemble three major Great Wall Motors (GWM) models: Tank 500, Poer Canon, and Poer Canon Alpha. The announcement was made by Sazgar’s senior executive, Ali Hameed, during PakWheels’ coverage of the Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) 2025 in Karachi.

According to Sazgar, the first locally assembled units of the GWM Tank 500 will begin rolling out by March 2026, followed by the Poer Canon series shortly after. This marks a significant shift for the Pakistani auto market, which has long relied on costly imports for large SUVs and double-cab pickups.

Two Powertrains for Tank 500: HEV and PHEV

The Tank 500 will be introduced in two electrified powertrains:

  • HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) – to be offered as a 7-seater
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) – to be introduced as a 5-seater

These additions give consumers options based on seating needs and driving preferences. Sazgar previously introduced an imported Tank 500 HEV priced at Rs. 4.5 crore, but the locally assembled version is expected to be significantly more affordable, with an estimated price under Rs. 2.5 crore. Considering the SUV’s size, safety features, and technology, this pricing places it competitively within Pakistan’s premium SUV market.

Poer Canon Series Coming in PHEV Only

The Poer Canon and Poer Canon Alpha—popular double-cab pickup trucks in China—will be offered in PHEV powertrains in Pakistan. Ali Hameed clarified that although China offers multiple diesel variants, Pakistan will not receive diesel versions due to insufficient diesel fuel quality, despite the engines being Euro-5 certified. Instead, Sazgar will focus entirely on petrol-powered PHEV versions for the local market.

Hameed highlighted that the Poer Canon is among the best-selling double-cab pickups in China, which strengthens its potential in Pakistan’s evolving pickup segment.

Sazgar Expanding Production Capacity

To meet anticipated demand, Sazgar is also working on expanding its manufacturing capabilities. According to Hameed, the expansion will be completed within the next two months, enhancing the company’s overall production efficiency and enabling timely rollout of the new GWM models.

A Major Shift for Pakistan’s Auto Market

The introduction of locally assembled electrified SUVs and pickups marks a major milestone for Pakistan. It not only reduces reliance on imports but also brings advanced hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology within reach for a larger customer base.

With competitive pricing, strong brand reputation, and growing EV adoption, Sazgar’s partnership with GWM is expected to play a transformative role in the country’s automotive future.
