Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan Railways is undergoing major upgrades to make the national rail network more safe, modern, and passenger-friendly. Speaking to the media after inaugurating the Safe and Smart Railway Station Project in Rawalpindi, the minister said that similar upgrades will soon be introduced at other major stations across the country.
Rawalpindi has become the first railway station in Pakistan to be equipped with a comprehensive digital monitoring and security system. As part of the new setup, 143 high-definition surveillance cameras have been installed to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of the station premises, ticket reservation areas, passenger waiting zones, and surrounding railway vicinity. This system is designed to not only enhance public security but also to help supervisors maintain improved workflow and discipline among railway staff.
Upgraded Passenger Facilities for a Modern Travel Experience
During the inauguration, the minister also opened newly renovated passenger lounges and waiting rooms. The upgraded facilities include:
- Separate family and women-only waiting areas
- Tea and refreshment counters
- Free Wi-Fi access
- ATM services
- Comfortable seating and improved cleanliness standards
He emphasized that these upgrades reflect the government’s commitment to providing passengers with secure, comfortable, and dignified travel conditions.
Improvements to Train Coaches and More Stations to Follow
Abbasi shared that Pakistan Railways is also replacing older train coaches with refurbished and improved rakes. Currently, three upgraded rakes have already been deployed on the Lahore–Rawalpindi route, with the fourth scheduled for rollout by mid-November.
Additionally:
- Faisalabad Railway Station upgrades have been completed
- Karachi Cantt Station modern terminal will open soon
- Other major stations are already being surveyed for modernization
These initiatives fall under the federal government’s wider strategy to revitalize rail transport, improve passenger services, and restore public confidence in the railway system.
The launch of the Safe and Smart Railway Station in Rawalpindi marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s rail modernization roadmap. By enhancing station facilities, strengthening digital surveillance, and upgrading rolling stock, Pakistan Railways is moving closer to creating a safer, smarter, and more passenger-focused travel experience for millions of commuters across the country.
