The Sindh government, in collaboration with Pakistan Railways, has announced a major transport initiative — the launch of a Rohri–Sukkur suburban train service. This development is part of a broader vision to expand efficient, modern public transport systems across the province.

The announcement came after a high-level meeting between Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Shah and senior Pakistan Railways officials. Discussions centered on extending suburban rail services beyond Karachi to reach Sukkur, creating a network modeled on the successful Lahore suburban rail system. Shah emphasized that the route has been identified as a priority corridor due to its potential to benefit millions of daily commuters in Sindh.

Project Details and Coordination

The Rohri–Sukkur route will be developed as a joint venture between the Sindh government and Pakistan Railways. A dedicated coordination committee will oversee the project’s progress, ensuring smooth communication and timely execution.

Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to the larger ML-1 (Main Line-1) railway modernization project. Plans include upgrading railway stations, installing improved safety measures at level crossings, and creating green belts around station premises to enhance the commuter experience and the surrounding environment.

Addressing Urban Transport Challenges

The meeting also touched upon the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project, where Shah voiced concern over stalled progress. Despite the Sindh government completing its assigned tasks, Pakistan Railways has delayed removing encroachments, slowing the project’s advancement.

Transforming Public Transport in Sindh

Once operational, the Rohri–Sukkur suburban train service is expected to reduce road congestion, offer affordable and reliable travel, and promote economic activity in the region. This marks a significant step toward modernizing Sindh’s transport infrastructure beyond its major metropolitan centers, aligning with national goals for sustainable and efficient mobility.
