The long-anticipated Rawalpindi Ring Road project is well underway, with officials confirming that the massive infrastructure undertaking will be completed by end of 2025. With a total length of 38.3 kilometers and a revised budget of Rs. 32.996 billion, this project is being hailed as a major step forward in easing urban congestion and boosting regional economic activity.

Key Highlights of the Rawalpindi Ring Road

Initiated by the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), the Rawalpindi Ring Road is a six-lane, controlled-access highway, designed to accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/h. The road will span a 90-meter-wide right of way and feature five major interchanges at Baanth, Maira Mohra, Khasala, Kolian Parr, and Thalian, enhancing connectivity between Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and the New Islamabad International Airport.

Director-General Kinza Murtaza confirmed that nearly 50% of the construction has been completed. She added that out of the Rs. 12 billion allocated by the Punjab government, Rs. 7 billion has already been utilized, with the remaining Rs. 5 billion earmarked for use by June 2025.

Strategic Importance and CPEC Link

What sets this project apart is its strategic alignment with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This positions the ring road as a critical trade route, enabling faster, more efficient transportation of goods and services while also spurring the development of new commercial zones along its corridor.

In terms of infrastructure, the project includes:

  • 2 bridges over the Soan and Sill Rivers
  • 12 additional bridges across nullahs and secondary roads
  • 1 railway bridge
  • 11 overhead passes to ensure seamless transit

Approximately 8,992 kanals of land have been acquired at a separate cost of Rs. 6.7 billion, ensuring minimal disruptions to the road’s progress.

Economic and Urban Impact

The Rawalpindi Ring Road is expected to dramatically reduce traffic congestion between Rawalpindi and Islamabad by diverting heavy and inter-city traffic away from populated zones. Moreover, by improving access to vital areas and commercial hubs, the project is poised to attract investment, real estate development, and job creation in the region.

According to RDA, once operational, the Ring Road will act as a catalyst for urban expansion and economic growth, particularly in underdeveloped zones adjacent to the route.
