In a major step toward modernizing Rawalpindi’s road infrastructure, the Punjab government has approved the construction of two new underpasses along the city’s iconic Mall Road. This development is part of a broader strategy to make the entire 26-kilometre stretch of road signal-free, significantly improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in one of Pakistan’s busiest urban centers.
The project was recently spotlighted during a surprise site visit by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who inspected the progress of the ongoing GPO Underpass and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover. Expressing satisfaction with the high standards of work, the chief minister directed officials to maintain construction quality and to incorporate environmental elements by planting trees along the road.
Key Features of the Signal-Free Corridor Project
- Two New Underpasses on Mall Road to ease bottlenecks near medical hubs like AFIC and MH.
- Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Flyover, originating from Khawaja Corporation, being developed at a cost of Rs. 2.3 billion.
- Underpass project valued at Rs. 4.38 billion, including pedestrian walkways for safer foot traffic.
- 85% of flyover and 60% of underpass construction already completed.
- Expected project completion: October 31.
According to the Punjab Secretary of Communications and Works, the new infrastructure will accommodate around 79,000 vehicles daily, significantly improving access to the Motorway and Rawalpindi Ring Road. Once completed, this signal-free corridor will be a game-changer for commuters and local businesses, reducing travel time and enhancing road safety.
A Greener Vision for Urban Development
In addition to traffic efficiency, the project also supports a greener urban environment. Trees will be planted along both sides of the road, helping to combat urban pollution and enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal.
This project forms part of the largest development initiative in Rawalpindi’s history, signaling a new era of smart, sustainable, and commuter-friendly urban planning.
