The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has officially announced an increase in vehicle registration and transfer fees, which will come into effect from September 1, 2025. Officials have advised citizens to complete their registrations before the deadline in order to avoid paying higher charges.
New Digital Registration System
As part of the reforms, the department is introducing a digital registration system that directly connects each vehicle’s registration number to the owner’s computerized national identity card (CNIC). This step aims to improve transparency, reduce fraud, and streamline record-keeping across the province.
Under this framework:
- Sellers will be able to retain their existing registration numbers.
- Buyers of used vehicles will be issued new registration numbers by the Motor Registering Authority.
- Unused registration numbers can be reserved for up to two years.
Additional Fees for Delays
The Excise Department has also clarified that late applications will incur extra charges. For example, a one-month delay in transferring ownership after purchase will result in mandatory additional fees.
This move is designed to encourage timely registrations and ensure that vehicle ownership records remain accurate.
Reporting Untransferred Vehicles
The department has urged sellers who have already sold their vehicles but whose buyers have not yet completed the ownership transfer process to immediately report the matter by calling helpline 1035. In such cases, the registration can be suspended to prevent any potential misuse of the vehicle under the seller’s name.
With the implementation of new digital systems and higher fees, the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department is aiming to make vehicle ownership more secure and transparent. Vehicle owners are strongly advised to complete their registrations before September 1 to avoid additional costs.
