Punjab Unveils Rs. 85 Billion Transport Budget to Modernize Urban Mobility

In a decisive move to revamp its public transportation network, the Punjab government has allocated Rs. 85 billion to the transport sector in the fiscal year 2025–26. This comprehensive budget aims to expand urban mobility, reduce congestion, and support sustainable transport solutions across the province.

A central highlight of this year’s transport budget is the Yellow Line Mass Transit System, set to become a cornerstone of Lahore’s growing metro network. With an initial allocation of Rs. 10 billion, the project is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and serve as a vital route for thousands of daily commuters in Lahore.

To sustain ongoing progress, the government has earmarked Rs. 4.57 billion for existing transportation projects. A significant portion—Rs. 80.43 billion—will be channeled into new initiatives, reflecting the province’s long-term vision for a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly transport infrastructure.

Other key allocations in the budget include:

• Rs. 500 million for a new urban bus depot at Thokar Niaz Baig
• Rs. 400 million for a depot near the Lahore Railway Station
• Rs. 200 million dedicated to electric bus depots, promoting sustainable transit
• Rs. 50 million to implement a centralized automated fare collection and scheduling system
• Rs. 5 million for the security of Chinese staff at the Orange Line Metro Train depot

In addition to physical infrastructure, Punjab is investing in future planning and safety, with budget provisions for feasibility studies, vehicle testing laboratories, and the establishment of a Transport Tower, which has been granted Rs. 10 million for initial development.

This budget marks a pivotal shift toward smart, sustainable, and integrated transport solutions. With strategic investments in mass transit, technology-driven fare systems, and electric vehicle support, Punjab aims to ease urban travel, reduce environmental impact, and provide more accessible and reliable commuting options to the public.
