The Punjab Works and Communications Department has announced an ambitious plan to digitize 38 toll plazas across 24 districts, introducing an electronic toll collection (ETC) system to modernize the province’s road infrastructure and improve revenue management.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Works and Communications Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharath, where department officials shared a detailed briefing on the project’s objectives and implementation phases.

According to the minister, the digitization drive aims to establish a modern, automated toll collection system capable of verifying vehicles electronically, ensuring transparent revenue collection, and minimizing human intervention. The initiative will significantly reduce manual errors, curb revenue leakages, and improve traffic flow efficiency at toll points.

Districts to Benefit from the Digitization Initiative

The project will be rolled out in phases, covering toll plazas located in Attock, Bahawalpur, Khushab, Gujrat, Chakwal, Sargodha, Murree, Okara, Layyah, Lodhran, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Mianwali, Narowal, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Vehari, and Gujranwala.

These districts collectively handle a large volume of intercity and freight traffic, making them key points for toll revenue optimization and digital transformation. Once completed, the system is expected to enhance accountability and provide real-time data monitoring of toll transactions.

A Step Toward Smart Infrastructure

Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharath emphasized that the project aligns with the Punjab government’s broader vision of digital governance and smart infrastructure development. By integrating technology into toll management, the department aims to create a transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly system that supports both commuters and the provincial economy.

The move reflects Punjab’s growing focus on digital transformation across multiple sectors, marking a significant step toward a fully automated transport and communication network in the province.
