Punjab Plans Service Duct Integration in Major Road Construction Projects

In an important move toward sustainable urban development, the Punjab government is actively reviewing a proposal to include service ducts in all major road construction projects across Lahore and other cities in the province. This initiative is designed to prevent the need for repeated road digging, a practice that often disrupts traffic flow, causes public inconvenience, and leads to higher maintenance costs.

According to a spokesperson for the Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering Department, the government aims to enhance urban infrastructure resilience while conserving public resources. The official explained that the construction of service ducts—designated underground pathways for utilities such as telecommunications, electricity, internet, and surveillance equipment—can significantly extend the lifespan of roadways.

Special Committee to Consult Key Stakeholders

To ensure effective implementation, a special committee will be formed in the coming weeks. This committee will consult with all relevant stakeholders, including the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, telecom service providers, and other public utility departments. The purpose is to determine the optimal size, placement, and design of the ducts for both present and future utility needs.

Sustainable and Citizen-Centric Development

The initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Punjab government to promote sustainable, eco-friendly, and citizen-focused urban planning. The spokesperson emphasized that ongoing development work across Punjab is being carried out with a strong focus on long-term resilience, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

By reducing the need for future road excavations, service ducts in road construction will not only lower operational costs but also contribute to cleaner, safer, and more efficient urban environments.

Integrating service ducts in road construction is a forward-thinking approach that addresses infrastructure durability and public convenience. As Punjab continues to evolve into a modern and connected province, such proactive planning measures will play a crucial role in smart urban development and infrastructure management.
