In a significant move toward greener transportation, the Punjab government has officially launched green number plates for electric vehicles (EVs) across the province. The initiative is part of the region’s broader strategy to support clean energy and reduce vehicular emissions by promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
According to Additional Director General Ahmad Saeed, the new green-colored license plates are now mandatory for all registered electric vehicles in Punjab. These distinct plates will replace the conventional white or yellow plates, helping both the public and authorities easily distinguish EVs from their fuel-powered counterparts.
Growing Electric Vehicle Adoption in Punjab
As of now, over 16,000 electric vehicles have been officially registered in the province. These include:
- 14,500 electric bikes
- 1,461 electric cars
- 36 electric rickshaws
- 31 electric buses
This upward trend in EV registrations demonstrates a growing awareness among consumers about sustainable mobility options and the environmental benefits of switching to electric.
EV Tax Benefits Continue in 2025-26
In addition to the rollout of green plates, the Punjab government has reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging EV ownership by extending the current tax incentives. EV owners will continue to enjoy a 95% discount on registration and token taxes, making it financially easier for consumers to transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric alternatives.
Driving Toward a Cleaner Future
This initiative aligns with the Punjab government’s climate action goals, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and modernizing the province’s transportation infrastructure. With visible EV identification, improved incentives, and rising adoption rates, Punjab is on track to become a leader in eco-conscious transportation in Pakistan.
