The Punjab government has issued a public advisory in response to the rising levels of smog and air pollution across the province. The move aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s “Clean and Green Punjab” vision, which aims to improve environmental health and promote sustainable urban living.
Under the direction of the Chief Minister, a coordinated provincial plan has been put into motion, focusing on reducing pollution caused by traffic emissions, fuel burning, and urban congestion.
Key Recommendations for Citizens
The Environment Department has released guidelines encouraging the public to adopt responsible travel habits and reduce pollution wherever possible:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during peak rush hours
- Keep vehicles well-maintained to reduce harmful emissions
- Switch off engines at long traffic signals to conserve fuel
- Motorcyclists are advised to wear protective masks to prevent inhalation of smog particles
- Limit fuel wastage and adopt eco-friendly commuting practices
These measures are intended to not only protect public health but also to reduce stress on the environment during high-smog periods.
Educational Institutions and Workplaces Encouraged to Adjust Timings
To help reduce traffic congestion, schools, colleges, and offices have been encouraged to slightly modify their working hours. This step is designed to distribute traffic flow more evenly, reducing peak-time emissions, which are a major contributor to smog formation.
Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb stated that traffic police and district authorities have been directed to increase on-road monitoring to ensure compliance with traffic regulations, smooth vehicle movement, and prevent unnecessary idling.
Smog Prevention is a Shared Responsibility
Provincial authorities emphasized that while the government is implementing structural measures to reduce pollution, public cooperation is essential to achieve long-term improvement in air quality.
Citizens are encouraged to:
- Promote carpooling where possible
- Prefer public transport instead of individual vehicles
- Avoid burning trash or leaves
- Support community-level environmental activities
The Punjab smog advisory highlights the importance of collective action to tackle rising pollution levels. As the province continues to face environmental challenges, efforts under the Clean and Green Punjab vision aim to create a healthier, more sustainable living environment for all.
