The Punjab government has initiated a mega infrastructure project worth over Rs 13.33 billion in Rawalpindi to alleviate long-standing traffic congestion at some of the city’s busiest intersections. The project, approved by the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP), includes the construction of three underpasses and two flyovers, which are expected to transform urban mobility across the region.

According to official documents, the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has been tasked with executing the large-scale development. Initial construction activities, including piling tests near Fatima Jinnah Women University and the district courts, are already underway.

Rawalpindi’s road network accommodates approximately 482,000 vehicles daily, and these new projects aim to significantly reduce travel time, ease bottlenecks, and enhance traffic safety.

Key Projects and Features

  1. Katchery Chowk Project (Rs 5.97 billion)
    • Handles around 200,000 vehicles per day.
    • Includes a 1,394-foot underpass for Saddar-bound traffic from Jinnah Park.
    • Features a four-lane divided flyover.
    • 2.97 km of slip roads to be rehabilitated.
    • 24.2 kanals of land acquired for construction.
  2. Jinnah Park (Annexy Chowk) Project
    • Will feature a 1,263-foot underpass for Mushtaq Baig Shaheed Road-bound traffic.
    • Includes a 1,509-foot flyover toward Airport Road.
    • 2.22 km of at-grade roads will be upgraded.
    • 5.95 kanals of land acquired.
  3. Iftikhar Janjua Chowk (G.T. Road)
    • Accommodates around 146,000 vehicles daily.
    • Plans include a 1,165-foot underpass and 1.56 km of at-grade rehabilitation.
    • 4.28 kanals of land required.

Transforming Urban Mobility in Rawalpindi

Officials have emphasized that these developments will play a critical role in decongesting Rawalpindi’s major routes, particularly along G.T. Road and Airport Road, which serve as vital corridors for both local and intercity traffic.

The projects are designed to minimize signalized intersections, improve traffic flow efficiency, and reduce air pollution caused by idling vehicles. Once completed, they are expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of commuters daily, improving connectivity between commercial, residential, and administrative zones.

The Rs 13.33 billion investment underlines the Punjab government’s ongoing commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure, enhancing road safety, and supporting the economic vitality of Rawalpindi—one of Punjab’s most strategically important cities.
