In a decisive move to combat rising air pollution levels, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that all vehicles without valid green stickers will be seized starting November 15. The action is part of a province-wide anti-pollution campaign aimed at curbing vehicular emissions and improving air quality across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, which has been among the world’s most polluted cities in recent years.
The announcement was made by Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the EPA Punjab, who confirmed that emission testing has been made mandatory for every vehicle operating in the city. The EPA’s enforcement teams have already launched field operations against smoke-emitting and noise-producing vehicles, inspecting emission levels and verifying environmental compliance.
“Only vehicles that meet Punjab’s environmental standards will stay on the roads,” Dr. Sheikh emphasized. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against polluting vehicles, and strict legal action will be taken against owners of non-compliant cars.”
According to the EPA, vehicles passing the Emission Testing System (ETS) will receive a green sticker, signifying compliance with provincial environmental standards. Any vehicle found on the road without this certification after November 15 will be impounded immediately.
The initiative comes as part of Punjab’s broader clean air and smog control strategy, especially critical during the winter smog season when pollution levels spike due to vehicular emissions, crop residue burning, and industrial activity.
Dr. Sheikh added that the EPA has begun the strictest campaign yet against vehicular air pollution, beginning in Lahore and soon expanding to other major cities in Punjab, including Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, and Multan.
The EPA’s green sticker campaign is designed to encourage eco-friendly transportation practices and promote public awareness about the environmental impact of unchecked emissions. By enforcing emission testing and penalizing non-compliant vehicles, Punjab aims to reduce smog formation, improve public health, and align with national environmental standards.
Experts believe that if implemented effectively, this measure could significantly contribute to reducing air pollution, one of Punjab’s most persistent urban challenges.
The EPA has urged vehicle owners to get their emissions tested and obtain green stickers before the November 15 deadline to avoid fines and impoundment.
