Punjab has taken a major step toward transforming urban transport by finalizing the financing structure for Pakistan’s first electric taxi service. The initiative, earlier approved this year, is a flagship project of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aiming to provide affordable, eco-friendly, and modern transport options in the province.

1,100 Electric Taxis to Hit Lahore Roads

According to the working paper, the project’s initial phase will see the introduction of 1,100 electric taxis in Lahore. These vehicles, sourced from China, will set the foundation for a sustainable transport system that reduces fuel dependency and urban pollution.

Subsidized Financing Structure

To make electric taxis affordable for buyers, the Punjab government has introduced a subsidized financing scheme:

  • Bank loans up to Rs. 6.5 million will be available for electric vehicle purchases.
  • The government will bear the interest cost, reducing the financial burden on drivers.
  • For vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the Punjab government will contribute Rs. 585,000 towards the down payment.
  • The remaining cost will be financed through banks, with buyers making subsidized contributions.

A total of Rs. 2 billion has been allocated for the program, highlighting the government’s commitment to green mobility.

Charging Infrastructure in Place

To support the service, 18 charging stations have already been established across Lahore, with further expansion planned as the fleet grows. This infrastructure will ensure smooth operations and encourage adoption of EV technology.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The electric taxi service is expected to:

  • Lower transport costs for commuters by reducing reliance on costly fossil fuels.
  • Curb carbon emissions and contribute to cleaner air in Lahore.
  • Modernize urban mobility, positioning Punjab as a leader in sustainable public transport in South Asia.

A Model for the Future

Officials suggest the electric taxi service in Lahore will serve as a pilot project, with the potential to expand to other cities in Punjab and beyond. By aligning subsidies, financing, and infrastructure, the initiative represents a bold step toward green mobility in Pakistan.
