Punjab Introduces 87 Electric Buses to Modernize Public Transport in Twin Cities

The Punjab government has received a fleet of 87 air-conditioned electric buses from China, marking a transformative step toward a sustainable and affordable public transport system in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. This eco-friendly initiative aims to modernize urban mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and provide commuters with a safer and more comfortable travel experience.

According to official sources, the buses will operate across 84 kilometers in the twin cities, covering key urban routes to improve connectivity for thousands of daily passengers. Each bus comes equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, and mobile charging ports, ensuring a connected and comfortable journey for commuters of all ages.

Affordable and Inclusive Travel for Citizens

A key highlight of the initiative is its inclusive fare policy. Senior citizens aged 60 years and above will travel free of cost, while the standard ticket price is set at Rs20 per passenger — making it one of the most affordable public transport options in Pakistan’s urban centers.

PML-N Rawalpindi Division President Malik Abrar Ahmed confirmed that the 87 electric buses will operate on four major routes, with the first route running from Rawat to Motorway Chowk. The launch will be carried out in phases to ensure operational efficiency and smooth integration into the existing traffic system.

“This project represents the government’s commitment to providing energy-efficient, safe, and accessible transportation for the public,” Ahmed said.

Sustainability and Connectivity at the Core

Beyond affordability, the electric buses are designed to minimize environmental impact. By replacing diesel-based transport with zero-emission electric buses, Punjab aims to cut down urban pollution and align its transport policies with Pakistan’s clean energy goals.

Each bus’s GPS and real-time monitoring system will help authorities manage schedules efficiently, while onboard Wi-Fi and mobile charging ports cater to modern commuter needs — a feature rarely seen in Pakistan’s public transport network.

Launch Postponed, But Coming Soon

The official inauguration of the project was initially scheduled for October 15, but was postponed due to civil unrest caused by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests across Punjab. However, officials have confirmed that the launch will take place soon once conditions normalize, ensuring a smooth rollout of the service.

A Greener Future for Urban Transport

With the introduction of these 87 electric buses, Punjab is setting a new precedent for sustainable mobility in Pakistan. The project represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning — one that prioritizes environmental conservation, technological advancement, and public accessibility.

Once operational, this fleet will not only enhance connectivity between Rawalpindi and Islamabad but also serve as a model for future electric transport initiatives in other major cities across the country.
