Punjab Launches AC Electric Buses With Wi-Fi: Comfort, Connectivity, and Cleaner Travel

In a major step towards modernizing public transportation and promoting clean energy, the Punjab government has announced the introduction of air-conditioned electric buses with built-in Wi-Fi. As part of the initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, 26 modern electric buses will soon begin operations in Attock, setting the stage for greener and more efficient urban transit in the province.

The announcement was made by Provincial Minister for Transport and Mass Transit, Bilal Akbar Khan, during a high-level meeting in Attock. The meeting included key stakeholders, such as Deputy Commissioner Rao Atif Raza and Secretary RTA Sardar Zaheer Ahmed Khan.

Electric Buses in Punjab: What to Expect

The new fleet promises a significantly upgraded travel experience:

  • Air-conditioned interiors for relief during Pakistan’s hot summer months
  • Free Wi-Fi to keep passengers connected on the go
  • Affordable fares, targeting low-income commuters without compromising comfort
  • Zero tailpipe emissions, reducing urban pollution and promoting sustainability

This initiative is part of Punjab’s broader transition to eco-friendly, smart public transport, echoing global efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Government Crackdown on Overcharging and Overloading

Minister Bilal Akbar Khan also took the opportunity to emphasize the need for strict regulation of local transport services. During his visit to the General Bus Stand in Attock, he personally reviewed ticket prices—particularly around Eid-ul-Adha, a time when fare gouging is common.

Passengers confirmed that fares were consistent with official government rates, prompting the minister to commend the District Transport Authority (DTA) for effective enforcement. He directed authorities to take strict action against transporters found overcharging or overloading passengers.

Why This Matters?

The launch of electric buses in Attock is not just about cleaner fuel—it’s about transforming public perception of mass transit. In a country where many commuters avoid buses due to discomfort or poor reliability, Punjab’s move to introduce high-tech, comfortable, and climate-friendly buses can lead to:

  • Increased public transport usage
  • Reduced urban congestion
  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions
  • Improved air quality in densely populated areas

The success of this pilot project could pave the way for similar electric bus deployments in other cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad.

Globally, cities like Delhi, London, and Beijing have already embraced electric public transport to combat pollution—Punjab is now joining the trend with localized strategies.

Looking Ahead

With plans to roll out more electric vehicles and improve terminal facilities, Punjab’s transport ministry is signaling a shift in policy toward sustainability, affordability, and passenger experience.

The provincial government also aims to electrify bus terminals and explore partnerships for solar-powered charging infrastructure to reduce operational costs and dependency on the grid.
