Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that another 100 electric buses have departed from Shanghai Port and are on their way to Pakistan. The modern buses, part of the government’s ambitious public transport initiative, will be operational in every district of Punjab by December 2025.

Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Maryam Nawaz said the buses will offer citizens an affordable and comfortable commute, with a fare of just Rs20 per ride. She highlighted that the fleet is equipped with climate control, CCTV monitoring, and modern seating, ensuring both security and convenience.

Rawalpindi Among First to Benefit

Responding to a citizen’s comment online, the chief minister confirmed that more than 100 buses will soon arrive in Rawalpindi, adding that other districts would also receive their share of eco-friendly vehicles in the coming months.

A Phased Expansion Across Punjab

This latest development follows earlier updates:

  • On August 12, 2025, Maryam Nawaz revealed that another fleet of 100 buses was being loaded at Yantai Port in China for districts including Mianwali, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Pakpattan, and Dera Ghazi Khan—areas historically underserved by formal public transport.
  • On July 29, 2025, she announced that 1,100 electric buses were under manufacture in China, with the first fleet of 240 units expected to arrive by August.
  • Punjab first received 27 electric buses in January 2025, following her December 2024 statement about the vehicles being ready for shipment.

Affordable, Green, and Inclusive Transport

The Punjab electric bus project aims to gradually replace conventional buses with electric vehicles across both urban and rural districts. By making transport affordable at just Rs20 per trip, the government is ensuring that public mobility becomes more economical, environmentally friendly, and accessible.

This initiative not only addresses Punjab’s long-standing public transport challenges but also aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and embracing clean energy solutions.
