In a landmark move towards a greener and more efficient public transport system, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval for the rollout of 1,500 electric buses across Punjab. This initiative, led by the Punjab Transport Department, marks a major step in the province’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and reducing environmental pollution.

Phase One: 380 Electric Buses for Lahore and Gujranwala

In the first phase of the project, 380 electric buses will be purchased and deployed in Lahore and Gujranwala, two of the province’s largest and most congested cities. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has issued strict directives to expedite the procurement process, ensuring the electric bus service launches by June 2025.

Once operational, this service is expected to ease traffic pressure, reduce emissions, and provide modern, affordable transportation to thousands of daily commuters.

Expansion to Other Major Cities

The electric bus network will not stop at Lahore and Gujranwala. The CM has approved plans to expand the service to other major districts, including:

  • Sargodha
  • Sheikhupura
  • Sialkot
  • Gujrat
  • Rahim Yar Khan
  • Dera Ghazi Khan

This phased rollout ensures that remote urban areas also benefit from upgraded and eco-friendly public transportation.

New Bus Services in Faisalabad

Special attention is being given to Faisalabad, the third largest city in Pakistan. The city will soon see the launch of:

  • Red Bus Service (Samundri Road to Sargodha Road)
  • Orange Bus Service (Jaranwala to Jhang Road)

Planning is also underway for dedicated electric bus tracks in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, while Lahore will feature a Yellow Line electric bus track, with a 15-day deadline set for its design and execution.

Charging Stations and Transport Command Center

To support this electric revolution, CM Maryam Nawaz has also called for detailed proposals for the installation of EV charging stations and approved the development of a state-of-the-art Transport Tower and Command & Control Center in Lahore.

A Vision for Inclusive Growth

“I am the Chief Minister of all,” stated Maryam Nawaz Sharif. “The people of every city in Punjab deserve a modern, world-class transport system.” Her vision emphasizes inclusive development by ensuring that cities beyond Lahore also receive attention and investment in infrastructure.

Toward a Cleaner, Smarter Punjab

This ambitious electric bus initiative is expected to redefine urban transport in Punjab, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and set a new benchmark for environmentally conscious governance in Pakistan. With strong leadership and timely execution, Punjab could soon become a model for sustainable mobility in South Asia.
