In a significant step toward improving public transport accessibility, two students have developed a mobile application designed to assist commuters using Punjab’s electric bus service. The initiative aims to address one of the most common problems faced by passengers—lack of accurate route and timing information.
The idea for the Punjab electric bus app originated from a real-life experience. One of the developers, Muhammad Ghayas, shared that he once waited at a bus stop for nearly 30 minutes, only to discover that the last bus on his route had already departed. This inconvenience motivated him and his colleague, Rizwan Ali, to create a digital solution that could help others avoid similar situations.
Key Features of the App
The application provides essential details about electric bus services across Punjab. Users can easily access:
- Bus routes and stops
- Departure schedules
- Notifications for route or timing changes
One of the standout features of the app is its ability to function even without an internet connection, making it highly practical for users with limited connectivity. The developers utilized publicly available data and presented it in a user-friendly format to ensure ease of use for all commuters.
Early Success and Public Response
Although the app has not yet been officially launched on the Google Play Store, it is currently accessible through a website. Despite its limited release, the application has already gained significant traction. After being shared on Instagram, it attracted over 50,000 views within just two days and was downloaded by more than 500 users.
This early success highlights the strong demand for reliable public transport information systems in Pakistan, especially as electric bus networks continue to expand.
Future Plans and Challenges
While the app offers valuable features, it does not yet include live bus tracking—a feature many users are eager to see. According to co-developer Rizwan Ali, implementing real-time tracking would require collaboration with government bodies such as the Punjab Transport Authority and the Punjab Information Technology Board.
The developers have already reached out to relevant authorities, including the Punjab Chief Minister, seeking support to enhance the application further. Their goal is to integrate live tracking and expand coverage to more cities across the province.
Currently, the app includes routes from six to seven major cities, but requests from users in other areas continue to grow.
A Step Toward Smarter Public Transport
The Punjab electric bus app represents a promising example of how local innovation can address everyday challenges. As Pakistan moves toward more sustainable and tech-driven transport solutions, such initiatives could play a crucial role in improving commuter convenience and efficiency.
If supported and scaled properly, this student-led project could evolve into a comprehensive digital platform for public transportation across Punjab.
