In a bold step toward green mobility, the Punjab government has launched the Electric Bike Scheme under the Chief Minister’s Green Credit Program, offering a cash incentive of up to Rs. 100,000 to eligible residents. The initiative aims to reduce harmful emissions by encouraging the transition from petrol-powered motorcycles to environmentally friendly electric bikes.

Key Features of the Scheme

  • Total Incentive: Rs. 100,000
  • Disbursement: Rs. 50,000 upfront + Rs. 50,000 after performance criteria
  • Eligibility Start Date: Purchases made from December 2024 onward
  • Bike Type: New electric bikes only (retrofitted petrol bikes not eligible)

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Be residents of Punjab
  • Purchase a brand-new electric bike
  • Register the bike under their own name
  • Submit required documentation (see below)

Required Documents for Application

To apply, eligible individuals must submit the following through the official Green Credit portal:

  1. Date of purchase
  2. Make and model of the electric bike
  3. Official registration number
  4. Chassis identification number
  5. Copy of registration papers
  6. Clear images of the bike

Following submission, a government representative will visit to verify the bike and documentation.

Disbursement Process

  1. Initial Payment – Rs. 50,000
Once verification is complete, the applicant receives the first installment.
  2. Final Payment – Rs. 50,000
To receive the second installment, users must:
    • Link their electric bike to the Green Credit mobile app
    • Cover 6,000 kilometers within 6 months of registration

Environmental Impact

According to Program Director Rizwana Anjum, this scheme is part of a broader goal to electrify 30% of Punjab’s transport network by 2030. For the current financial year:

  • 2,000 petrol bikes and 250 vehicles will be replaced with electric variants
  • Estimated emission reduction: 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually
  • Target emission reduction: 20% in transport by 2030

The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emphasized that only newly manufactured electric bikes qualify, excluding petrol-to-electric conversions.

How to Apply?

Applicants can apply through the official Green Credit Program portal. The app will soon be available for both Android and iOS, providing real-time updates on usage, kilometers driven, and claim status.

With air pollution and fuel costs on the rise, Punjab’s Rs. 100,000 Electric Bike Scheme offers a practical, eco-conscious, and financially smart alternative for daily commuters. It not only supports green transportation but also empowers citizens to contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.
