Punjab Moves to Digital Fare Payment and Green Transport Under CM Maryam Nawaz

Punjab is set to modernize its public transport network with a series of major upgrades following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The provincial Transport Department presented an ambitious roadmap that includes digitizing fare collection, promoting electric vehicles, and expanding recruitment in the sector.

One of the key reforms is the transition from the traditional token system to a fully digital fare payment method for Lahore’s Orange Line Metro Train and Metro Bus services operating in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Islamabad. The outdated tokens will soon be replaced by barcode-based entry gates, enabling commuters to pay with credit or debit cards, ATM cards, and mobile wallet apps.

Passengers will benefit from a modern tap-and-go system using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, offering fast and contactless access across the entire urban mass transit network. The new unified T-Cash Card will serve as a single payment solution valid for all Orange Line and Metro Bus routes throughout Punjab. Special discounted transit cards for students are also being developed to make daily commuting more affordable for young commuters.

To support these upgrades, the meeting approved technical recruitments for posts from Grades 5 to 18 within the Transport Department, ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the skills required for this digital shift.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also greenlit plans for Punjab’s first international transport expo, which will showcase the province’s advancements in smart mobility and sustainable transport solutions.

Another significant move is the planned launch of a universal RFID sticker system for vehicles to streamline vehicle identification and management. Additionally, the province is planning to phase out traditional motorcycle rickshaws and replace them with eco-friendly electric versions. CM Maryam Nawaz has requested comprehensive proposals for the electric rickshaw project, indicating a clear push towards sustainable urban mobility.

In line with this green vision, Punjab is also gearing up to roll out electric buses across various districts, with the first fleet expected to hit the roads by August.
