The Punjab government has taken another step toward encouraging environmentally friendly transportation by installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations inside the Civil Secretariat in Lahore. The new charging points have been installed near the Department of Archives building, specifically to support the use of government-owned EVs and drive the shift away from fuel-powered official transport vehicles.
Officials stated that the initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader environmental sustainability goals, especially as urban pollution levels continue to rise. “Promoting electric vehicles in government fleets will significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions,” an official said.
New Parking Facility Approved to Ease Congestion
In addition to the EV chargers, the provincial authorities have approved the development of a new parking area behind the Home Department building within the Secretariat premises. The decision follows years of parking challenges faced by employees, daily visitors, and public service applicants.
The new parking space is expected to:
- Reduce roadside congestion
- Improve movement within the Secretariat
- Provide organized parking for government staff and public visitors
The move is seen as a practical improvement to public service facilities as well as an infrastructure upgrade to accompany the EV transition.
Part of a Larger Shift Toward Green Mobility in Lahore
This development follows earlier efforts by the Lahore Transport Company (LTC), which announced a major plan to promote electric mobility across the city. The LTC plans to install EV charging stations at 241 designated locations, ensuring convenient access for both private and commercial EV users.
Key proposed charging locations include:
- Public parking plazas
- Government offices
- Commercial markets
- Major road corridors and bus terminals
The expansion of EV charging points is expected to encourage more people to switch from traditional fuel-based vehicles to electrified, zero-emission transport options.
Supporting Cleaner and Sustainable Urban Transport
The Punjab government has consistently highlighted the need to combat air pollution and smog, particularly in Lahore, where air quality levels frequently cross hazardous thresholds. Transitioning government fleets to electric vehicles is expected to set a precedent for private organizations and the general public.
Officials suggest that as the EV charging infrastructure expands, maintenance costs and dependency on imported fuel will decrease, further benefiting the province’s economy and climate.
