Free Public Transport Announced in Lahore for Basant Celebrations

The Punjab government has unveiled a comprehensive plan for Basant celebrations in Lahore, aiming to revive the cultural festival while ensuring public safety and convenience for residents. The announcement was made following a high-level meeting in Lahore where senior officials discussed administrative preparations, safety protocols, and transport arrangements for the event.

As part of the special measures, the provincial government has decided to provide free public transport across Lahore for three consecutive days—February 6, 7, and 8. The initiative is intended to facilitate citizens participating in Basant festivities and reduce traffic congestion during peak celebration hours. According to Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari, buses and rickshaws will operate free of cost throughout the city during these days.

Free Transport to Facilitate Citizens

Speaking after the meeting, Azma Bukhari stated that the decision to offer free transport reflects the government’s commitment to making Basant accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Public transport services will remain operational across all major routes, enabling families and visitors to move easily without additional financial burden.

Officials believe that free transport will not only encourage public participation but also help minimize private vehicle use, improving traffic flow and enhancing overall safety during the celebrations.

Regulated Kite Manufacturing Allowed

In another significant move, the Punjab government has decided to allow kite and kite string manufacturing from December 30, under regulated conditions. The step aims to support local businesses and traditional craftsmen while ensuring that safety standards are strictly followed.

Kite flying has historically been a central element of Basant celebrations, but past incidents linked to hazardous kite strings led to restrictions. Authorities have emphasized that only approved materials will be permitted, and strict enforcement measures will be in place to prevent misuse.

Sub-Committee Formed for Basant Planning

Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb has directed the formation of a special sub-committee tasked with preparing a detailed and comprehensive Basant plan. The committee will oversee safety arrangements, coordination between departments, crowd management strategies, and enforcement mechanisms.

Officials stressed that the revival of Basant would prioritize public safety, law enforcement coordination, and administrative preparedness, ensuring that the event remains festive without compromising lives or public order.

The announcement signals a renewed effort by the Punjab government to restore Lahore’s cultural traditions while maintaining responsible governance and safety oversight.
