Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has announced that the government will begin distributing free “Pink Scooters” to women in Karachi this week. The program is designed to support women’s mobility and provide them with a safe and reliable means of travel in the city.

The announcement was made during the minister’s inspection of the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) development work. He noted that construction of depots and related infrastructure was progressing steadily, while the Senator Taj Haider Bridge was in its final stages and expected to be completed within a week.

Expanding Karachi’s Public Transport Network

Memon further highlighted that the Sindh government, with the support of the World Bank, is working on several projects to modernize Karachi’s transport system. Alongside the Pink Scooter initiative, the city will soon see the introduction of a fleet of double-decker and electric buses, which are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks.

These projects are part of a broader effort to expand Karachi’s public transport infrastructure and reduce the city’s dependence on outdated and inefficient systems.

Local Bus Manufacturing Plans

The minister also revealed that during President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China, discussions were held regarding the establishment of bus manufacturing plants in Sindh. This step, he explained, would not only improve the availability of transport facilities but also create new employment opportunities for locals.

Addressing Challenges in Transport Projects

While acknowledging that utility transfers and other technical hurdles have caused delays in some projects, Memon assured the public that the government is actively working to resolve these issues. He emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s transport landscape.

A Step Toward Inclusive Urban Mobility

The launch of Pink Scooters for women in Karachi represents a significant step toward inclusive and equitable urban mobility. By prioritizing women’s transport needs and investing in large-scale projects, Sindh is setting the foundation for a safer, more accessible, and sustainable transport future.
