Islamabad, June 1, 2025 — In a move set to impact commuters and travelers during the upcoming Eid holidays, the federal government has announced a Rs1 increase in the price of petrol. The new rate, effective for the next 15 days, raises the price of petrol to Rs253.63 per litre.
The adjustment comes as part of the government’s bi-monthly fuel price review and takes into account fluctuations in global oil prices and exchange rates. Despite the hike in petrol, the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) remains unchanged at Rs254.64 per litre, offering some relief to the transportation and agriculture sectors, which heavily rely on diesel.
This slight increase, though modest, may still weigh on household budgets, particularly as citizens prepare for Eid festivities. Fuel price changes are closely watched in Pakistan, where transport costs directly influence inflation and the cost of essential goods.
The timing of the petrol price hike, just days before Eid, has sparked concerns among the public and transport operators, many of whom were hoping for relief during the festive season. Increased travel for family visits and holiday-related spending typically leads to a surge in fuel demand, amplifying the financial impact of even a small price increase.
Economists note that while the government has opted for a minimal upward revision this time, continued volatility in international oil prices and currency depreciation could lead to further adjustments in the coming weeks. Stakeholders across sectors are urging authorities to adopt a long-term fuel pricing strategy to ensure greater stability and predictability for consumers and businesses alike.
The next pricing review is expected in mid-June.
