After nearly seven years of delays and inaction, the much-anticipated Peshawar Ring Road project has finally gained momentum. Construction has officially begun on the missing 8.7-kilometer link connecting Warsak Road to Nasir Bagh Road, marking a significant step forward in the city’s urban infrastructure development.
Phase-I Construction Kicks Off
The Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) confirmed that work is now underway on Phase-I of the project. This section is expected to ease traffic congestion, streamline freight movement, and support planned urban growth in Peshawar.
The project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 9.67 billion and includes key components such as:
- Main roadway construction
- Underpasses and bridges
- Utility relocation
To ensure efficient execution, Phase-I has been divided into four construction packages. The contract has been awarded, and heavy machinery, along with labor teams, has been mobilized to the site.
Government Approvals and Deadlines
The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) approved Phase-I under a non-ADP (Annual Development Programme) model on March 3, 2025. Following that, tenders were issued and opened on April 23, 2025, according to PDA Director General Naeem Khan.
Importantly, the chief minister has mandated a six-month timeline for completion, and full financial support for the phase has been secured to avoid any further delays.
Phased Development Strategy
The overall Ring Road development is structured into three phases:
- Phase-I (Rs. 9.67 billion): Main construction from Warsak Road to Nasir Bagh Road
- Phase-II (Rs. 9.65 billion): Flyovers and service roads
- Phase-III (Rs. 1.879 billion): Electrification and supporting infrastructure
Each phase is designed to contribute toward building a modern, integrated road network that will decongest inner-city roads and improve connectivity for both personal and commercial transport.
A New Era for Peshawar’s Urban Planning
The Peshawar Ring Road project has long been seen as critical to easing the city’s growing traffic burden. Years of administrative hurdles and political delays had stalled the project, frustrating both commuters and businesses. With construction finally underway, the government is signaling a strong commitment to infrastructure modernization and urban development.
Upon completion, the new road segment is expected to become a vital artery, connecting northern and western parts of Peshawar more efficiently and setting the stage for future city expansion.
