With Muharram fast approaching, the City Traffic Police Peshawar has finalized a comprehensive traffic management plan to guarantee both vehicular mobility and public safety throughout the city. According to the official press release issued on Sunday, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Haroon Rashid Khan has orchestrated a large-scale deployment of personnel and resources.
Key Deployments and Support Teams
- 1,000+ Traffic Officers & Wardens: Positioned at major intersections, procession routes, and high-density areas.
- Forklifts & Motorcycle Riders: Assigned to quickly clear obstructions and manage sudden road blockages.
- Route Inspection Teams: Dedicated squads surveying Muharram procession paths to preemptively resolve potential issues.
CTO Khan emphasized the importance of proactive measures:
“Our traffic personnel will maintain a visible presence, inspect every procession route, and offer immediate solutions to any challenges raised by religious committees.”
Road Closures & Alternative Routes
From the 7th to the 10th of Muharram, all roads leading directly to processions and mourning sites will be temporarily closed to general traffic. To minimize inconvenience, the Traffic Police have arranged clearly signposted alternative corridors:
- West Ring Road Detour: Bypasses the main Imambargah district.
- University Road Link: Connects Hayatabad to Saddar without entering procession zones.
- Chowk Yadgar Bypass: A quick-through route for commuters heading north.
On-Site Inspections & Rapid Response
In addition to static deployments, officers will conduct regular visits to Imambargahs across Peshawar. During these inspections, they will:
- Identify bottlenecks and safety hazards
- Coordinate with local stewards for crowd management
- Arrange for medical and firefighting support as needed
CTO Khan reiterated, “Immediate action will be taken wherever problems are pointed out. Our goal is to keep traffic moving and maintain the highest standards of safety.”
By combining extensive manpower, strategic road closures, and real-time problem-solving, the Peshawar Traffic Police aims to ensure that both participants and everyday commuters experience minimal disruption during Muharram observances.
