Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has once again brought international recognition to Pakistan after TransPeshawar was shortlisted as a finalist for the prestigious Decarbonizing Transport Awards 2026. The announcement was shared by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam, who termed the development a significant achievement in the global climate and sustainability landscape.
According to Aslam, the shortlisting holds particular importance at a time when countries around the world are actively shifting toward cleaner, low-carbon transport solutions to combat climate change. He said the recognition reflects positively on Pakistan and highlights the country’s growing role in adopting modern, environmentally responsible urban mobility systems.
The Peshawar BRT project has already built an impressive international reputation. Muzammil Aslam noted that the system has won five international awards, making it the most internationally awarded metro bus service in Pakistan to date. These accolades have positioned the project as a benchmark for mass transit development in the region.
Operated by TransPeshawar, the BRT network serves as the backbone of Peshawar’s urban public transport system. The provincial government has consistently promoted the project as a transformative initiative designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve commuting efficiency, and lower vehicle emissions in the provincial capital.
Beyond improving daily mobility, the BRT system plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable transport goals. By encouraging a shift away from private vehicles toward public transit, the system contributes to reduced fuel consumption and a smaller carbon footprint—key criteria considered in global decarbonization awards.
Urban transport experts view the international recognition as validation of Peshawar BRT’s planning, operational efficiency, and environmental impact. The shortlisting for the Decarbonizing Transport Awards 2026 places the project alongside leading global initiatives that prioritize climate-friendly transport infrastructure.
As Pakistan’s cities continue to face rapid urbanization and rising transport demands, the success of the Peshawar BRT offers a model for future mass transit projects across the country. If selected as a winner, the award would further cement Pakistan’s position on the global map of sustainable urban transportation.
The final results of the Decarbonizing Transport Awards 2026 are eagerly awaited, with policymakers and transport stakeholders hoping for another global win for Pakistan.
