Peshawar announce expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to additional routes

To meet the growing transportation needs of Peshawar, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to additional routes. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur.

The expansion will include new BRT routes on Ring Road, Bara Road, and Khyber Road, making the system more accessible to residents across the city. Additionally, 72 new diesel-hybrid buses will be introduced to ensure an efficient and eco-friendly transport system.

BRT Expansion Timeline and Infrastructure Upgrades

To support this expansion, authorities have set a six-month deadline to complete all required civil works before deploying the new buses. Ongoing BRT infrastructure projects, including the Mall of Hayatabad and Dubgari Plaza stations, are expected to be completed by April.

Beyond BRT expansion, the long-awaited missing link of Ring Road will be constructed with full government financial support. To further ease congestion, the government has approved the construction of seven new underpasses along Ring Road and University Road. Feasibility studies for these underpasses are expected to be completed within two months.

Traffic Management and Expansion to Other Cities

To improve urban mobility, additional underpasses will be built in densely populated areas. Moreover, authorities have announced that obstacles causing congestion on University Road will be removed within a month.

The KP government is also looking to expand the BRT model to other major cities, including Mardan, Swat, Abbottabad, and Dera Ismail Khan. Feasibility studies will be conducted to explore the viability of modern bus transit services in these cities.

A Step Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility

The BRT expansion and road infrastructure improvements represent a major step toward modernizing public transport in Peshawar. These efforts aim to:
Reduce traffic congestion
Improve connectivity and accessibility
Enhance commuter convenience
Promote a more sustainable and eco-friendly transport network

With these strategic developments, the KP government is working towards a modern, efficient, and commuter-friendly transportation system that will not only benefit daily travelers but also support the region’s economic growth.
