Pakistan Railways to Introduce Trains That Can Run at Speed of up to 160 km/h

Pakistan Railways is taking a significant leap toward transforming the country’s transport infrastructure with the introduction of high-speed, air-conditioned Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains. This ambitious modernization project is set to redefine passenger rail travel, offering enhanced speed, comfort, and efficiency for commuters and long-distance travelers alike.

The new DMU trains, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h, will primarily operate on the Lahore–Lalamusa–Rawalpindi route. By significantly cutting down travel times, these trains are expected to become a game-changer for daily passengers and tourists seeking reliable and comfortable transportation options.

This initiative is being executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, reflecting a collaborative approach between the government and private sector. Under this model, private companies will be responsible for the investment, procurement, and financing of the DMU trains, while Pakistan Railways will manage operations and provide the necessary infrastructure. This partnership aims to bring international standards of rail service to Pakistan.

Each DMU train will have a seating capacity of 380 passengers, making them an ideal solution for growing commuter demand. These trains are not only focused on luxury—they are a critical part of a broader strategy to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and stimulate economic growth through improved connectivity.

The introduction of modern DMU trains aligns with the government’s vision of upgrading public transportation and improving the overall quality of life for its citizens. With faster, cleaner, and more dependable train services, Pakistan is moving closer to a more sustainable and advanced transport network.

This project is more than just a rail upgrade—it’s a step toward a smarter, greener, and more connected future for Pakistan.
